Szeged - "City of Sunshine"

Szeged provides an unequal experience to anyone visiting the fourth biggest city of Hungary. The many sights like the Votive church, the Synagogue, the Hero's Arch, the Ferenc Móra Museum all give such a unique atmosphere to the city, that Szeged can be claimed confidently to be the gem of the Great Plains. The renovated shops, cafés and wonderful buildings of the Karasz Street give Szeged a Mediterranean style, which makes walking through the downtown area a delight. On the Klauzál square one can enjoy the delicious pastries of the famous Virág confectionary shop.

The city of Szeged already existed during the time of the Roman Empire. A couple of years before 1274 the settlement advanced to city rank, and became the cultural and economic centre of the region. Szeged played an important role during the 15th century in the campaigns lead against the advancing Turkish armies. 1879 was the most dramatic date in the city's history, but it was also the start of the rebirth of Szeged. The flood water of the river Tisza broke through the dams protecting the residence and virtually washed the entire city away. Only 5% of the buildings remained standing!

Szeged is not only famous for its history, the spice paprika, the Pick brand salami and its interesting sights, but the University of Szeged, which gives the city a youthful atmosphere with its more than 15 thousand students.

In addition a wide range of theatres, cinemas, clubs, riverside swimming pools and sport grounds provide plenty of possibilities for recreation. There are also several parks, a zoo and a famous botanical garden. Szeged may pride on its fine restaurants providing various national cuisines: Greek, Chinese, Italian and Arabic.

Public transportation in the form of streetcars, trolleybuses and buses is so good that you can virtually reach every corner of Szeged, if you take a fancy to discover the "City of Sunshine".
